कर्पूरगौरं करुणावतारम् संसारसारं भुजगेन्द्रहारम् |
सदा वसन्तं हृदयारविन्दे भवं भवानीसहितं नमामि ||
Why Shiva Is Called Mahadeva

This mantra is widely listened and loved, loved without knowing it's meaning. Today, here, we will elaborate its meanin. This mantra refers Shiva and is, in sanskrit, calling Shiva and worshiping him. It's like, (Just example) Oh Shiva, the almighty, the one who created this world, I bow you.


'Karpura' refers to Camphor, 'Gauram' to white-color or purity. Whole meaning of Karpura Gauram referring to Shiva as the one who is as pure as Camphor. 'Karuna' means compassion, meaning, sympathy or pity. 'Avataram' means the one bearing. So, as a whole, it means, the one who is sympathetic or the compassionate superior man. 'Sansara' means the world, and 'Saaram' means the essential one, as a whole, referring Shiva as the essence of the world. 'Bhujagendra' means the King of the Snakes(Serpents), 'Haaram' referring to as he is wearing the Snake as garland. Here, 'Haar' means garland.Om.svg, om 'Sadha Basantham' means always residing, i.e; living forever, while 'Hridayarabinde' means heart like-lotus. Referring as, always residing in a lotus-like heart. This sentence has a wide meaning and a very good reference. Lotus is a aquatic plant which grows in dirty water, but, it is always pure and clean. From this, you may know in which heart Shiva resides, the one which is clean and pure regardless of impure body. 'Bhawam Bhawani' means the god and goddesses, 'Sahitam Namaami' means bowing him along with the goddesses. Referring to bow at Shiva and the Bhawani (Parvati).
